Review- Thalassery, Anna Nagar

Thalassery at Anna Nagar is the latest Malayali restaurant in the locality. In a locality that already boasts of two other Malayali restaurants that are doing well, this place is a let-down if you're a keralite and have tasted good mallu food.

We arrived at Thalassery for lunch, quite late though, at 2:30 pm. The kitchen is usually open till 3 pm. So when the server told us that they had only 3 biriyanis left, I got annoyed. Apart from the biriyanis, the main course they served at that time were the parottas. What's the point of keeping the kitchen open till 3 pm? They ain't cooking anything anyway, just heating whatever is already ready & serving it. Hmph. However, we are informed that all side dishes are available.

We order for all the 3 biriyanis, one meals & parottas. On ordering the side dishes for the bread, the server informs us that they have only 3 chicken dishes available. no mutton & no sea food either. Beef, fortunately, was available. Why on earth were we told by the same guy 10 minutes ago that 'all side dishes' were available? We settle for parottas with Naadan Chicken Curry, Chicken Varutharacha Curry & Beef Fry. Ordering the food was simple because there wasn't much choice anyway.

I keep my fingers crossed hoping that atleast the food is better than the service. After around 20 minutes, the food is served & it's truly an insult to Malayali food. Now, don't get me wrong..everything tasted okay, totally edible but hey, I came in for good Malayali food. Both the Chicken curries tasted the same. The Beef Fry was decent but the Chicken Biriyani was very disappointing. Instead of being mildly spiced and flavoured with coconut, this one was actually a little sweet.

Prices were reasonable. Ambiance was fine. I really liked the interesting facts about Thalassery (the place in Kerala) given in the menu. But what matters the most- Food & service, were disappointing.

Will I go there again? I think I might give them a second chance but not anytime in the near future.

The first awkward post

Starting a blog and actually keeping it alive is a lot of work. More so for me because I get bored way too easily. I've been fiddling with the idea of maintaining a blog since years and finally, I think I'm ready for it :)

My blog is basically going to be all about my search for great food in Chennai and occasional rants about life in dental school and life, in general.

You can read all the restaurant reviews I write on http://chennai.burrp.com/user/chicfoodie and in future, here too!
